The Google Search filter in short

Smart Filter checks each Google Search result as the page loads, on google.com and Google's country domains such as google.de, google.co.uk or google.com.au. A result is read by its title and snippet, up to 400 characters; the address is not part of it. A keyword rule such as best * deals matches words; an AI rule such as thin SEO listicles describes a kind of page. A match folds into a Hidden line with a Show button, or is blurred or dimmed. Ads are left alone. Smart Filter sends nothing to Google.

What it filters on Google

Search results

Each result on the page is checked on its own, and the ones that match fold away. Ads are not touched.

Words with wildcards

A keyword rule such as best * deals matches best laptop deals and best phone deals alike: * stands for one word.

Pages by what they are

An AI rule such as thin SEO listicles catches the filler lists whatever their title says. To mute the election in search too, see how to hide politics.

Every country domain

The same rules run on google.com, google.de, google.co.uk and the other country domains.

Rules worth trying on Google

Keyword rules suit words that a page puts in its title. AI rules catch what a page is, whatever it is called. For words alone, the keyword blocker page explains the patterns.

Filtering Google Search: common questions

How do I hide results on Google Search?

Open Google, click the Smart Filter icon and add the suggested rule thin SEO listicles, or describe what you want gone in your own words. Each result is checked as the page loads, and the matches fold into a Hidden line with a Show button.

Can I block a website from Google results?

Only by words. A rule reads a result's title and snippet, not its address, so a keyword rule with a site's name hides its results where the name appears in them. An AI rule can describe the kind of site instead, such as coupon sites.

Does it work on Google in other countries?

Yes. The same rules run on google.com and Google's country domains, such as google.de, google.co.uk and google.com.au.

How many credits does a search use?

Keyword rules use none. AI rules come with up to 10,000 credits to start, and one credit checks one result against one AI rule: a page of 10 results and one AI rule uses up to 10 credits. Results you have seen before are not charged again. Plans and top-ups add more.

Does Google see that I filter?

No. Smart Filter changes the page only in your browser and sends nothing to Google. AI rules send the rule and up to 400 characters of each result to Smart Filter's server, and only after you agree; your search, your Google account and the page address are not part of it. See the privacy policy.
