The YouTube filter in short
Smart Filter checks each YouTube video on the home page, in search results, in the sidebar and in Shorts, and each comment. It reads the title, the channel name and, in search, the description snippet, up to 400 characters; it does not read thumbnails or transcripts. A keyword rule such as reaction* matches words in that text, a channel name included. An AI rule such as clickbait titles describes a kind of video. A match folds into a Hidden line with a Show button, or is blurred or dimmed; a hidden comment keeps its replies. Smart Filter does not remove the Shorts shelf or the recommendations as a whole.
A rule for a kind of video, not one channel
YouTube lets you mark a video Not interested or stop recommendations from a channel, one at a time. Clickbait comes from thousands of channels. These four titles are from four of them.

YouTube's own controls shape what it recommends and follow your account to every device. Smart Filter runs in Chrome on your computer, on search results too, and leaves a Hidden line you can open. An AI rule judges the title and can be wrong, which is why every hidden video keeps its Show button. Coming from another extension? See Smart Filter compared with Unhook, BlockTube and PureFeed.
Where the YouTube filter works
Home, search and the sidebar
Videos on the home page, in search results and in the list next to the video you watch, checked as more of them load.
Shorts
Shorts in the home page shelf and in search are checked like any other video. Smart Filter hides the ones that match a rule, not the whole shelf.
Comments
Each comment is checked on its own. A hidden comment keeps its replies, which are checked against your rules separately.
Blur or dim instead
Pick Blur or Dim for a rule you only half trust: the video keeps its place, and Show brings it back.
Rules worth trying on YouTube
Keyword rules suit channel names and words titles really use, and they are free. AI rules catch a kind of video whatever its title says. The clickbait filter page shows why a keyword list misses most clickbait. Election season? See how to hide political videos and posts.

Questions about the YouTube filter
How do I filter YouTube videos by keyword?
Open YouTube, click the Smart Filter icon and add a keyword rule such as reaction* or unboxing*, haul*. Every video whose title or channel name matches is hidden on the home page, in search, in the sidebar and in Shorts. Keyword rules are free and run on your device.
Can I block a YouTube channel?
Add the channel's name as a keyword rule. The channel name is part of each video's text, so its videos are hidden wherever they appear, search results included. A keyword also matches titles that use the same words.
Can I hide YouTube Shorts?
Smart Filter hides Shorts that match a rule, like any other video. It has no switch that removes the Shorts shelf as a whole; extensions that hide parts of the YouTube page, such as Unhook, do that.
Can I hide YouTube comments?
Yes. Each comment is checked against your rules, by its author and text. A hidden comment folds into a Hidden line and its replies stay visible.
What does Smart Filter read in a YouTube video?
The title, the channel name and, in search results, the description snippet, up to 400 characters in total. It does not watch the video and does not read thumbnails or transcripts.
Is the YouTube filter free?
Keyword rules like reaction* are free with no limit. AI rules come with up to 10,000 credits to start; one credit checks one video or comment against one AI rule. A long home page uses credits fast, so plans start at $5 a month.
What leaves my browser when I filter YouTube?
Nothing for keyword rules. For AI rules, and only after you agree: the rule and up to 400 characters of each video's title, channel and snippet, with a random install ID. Your Google account and the page address are not sent. Details are in the privacy policy.
